Set to leave Madrid
Carvajal will bring his playing career at Real Madrid to an end this summer by mutual agreement, concluding a 23-year association with the club that began when he joined the academy in 2002, the club announced.
Analysis: Carvajal made 450 appearances for Real Madrid's first team across 13 senior seasons, scoring 14 goals and winning 27 trophies including six Champions League titles, making him one of only five players in football history to have won the European Cup six times. Carvajal also claimed six Club World Cups, five European Super Cups, four La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey trophies and four Spanish Super Cups during one of the most decorated periods in the club's history. At individual level, he was named in the FIFPro World XI in 2024, won the FIFA Best men's team award and was voted the best player of the 2024 Champions League final in which he scored the decisive goal. With Spain, he earned 51 caps and won Euro 2024 and the Nations League in 2023. President Florentino Perez described Carvajal as a legend and symbol of Real Madrid and its academy, with the Santiago Bernabeu set to pay tribute to the defender during Saturday's final La Liga fixture of the season against Athletic Club.
On bench against Oviedo
Carvajal (toe) is on the bench to face Oviedo on Thursday.
Analysis: Carvajal will look to play some minutes after missing the previous three contests, but he'll serve as a substitute behind Trent Alexander-Arnold in this game. The veteran defender has struggled with various injuries in recent years, and it's unclear if he'll earn a big role for the remainder of the season.
Could return Thursday
Carvajal (foot) rejoined the group in training Tuesday and could be available for Thursday's clash against Real Oviedo, according to coach Alvaro Arbeloa, per Madrid Xtra. "Carvajal also rejoined the group yesterday and I understand he will return to training normally and could be available for tomorrow's match. As I said a few days ago, he deserves to say goodbye to this season by getting some minutes and playing."
Analysis: Carvajal's return to training is a faster turnaround than initially anticipated following his diagnosis with a fracture of the distal phalanx of his fifth toe. The veteran right-back has primarily provided depth cover behind Trent Alexander-Arnold this season, and his potential return for the final three fixtures would give him the opportunity to sign off the campaign with some minutes on the pitch. Manager Alvaro Arbeloa's warm comments about the defender underline the regard in which he is held at the club, with Real Madrid keen to give him a fitting farewell to what has been a difficult season on the injury front.
Trains with team Tuesday
Carvajal (foot) has returned to team training Tuesday, according to Madrid Xtra.
Analysis: Carvajal had been sidelined after being diagnosed with a fracture of the distal phalanx of his fifth toe, making his return to the training pitch a faster turnaround than initially anticipated. The veteran right-back has mainly been providing depth cover behind Trent Alexander-Arnold this season, so his reintegration adds a useful option for Real Madrid in the final stretch of the campaign rather than shaking up the starting lineup. The club will assess how he responds to the coming sessions before making any decisions on his potential involvement in the remaining fixtures.
Fractured toe rules him out
Carvajal (foot) has been diagnosed with a fracture of the distal phalanx of the fifth toe on his right foot, with his return dependent on the evolution of the injury, according to the club.
Analysis: Carvajal's absence is a limited blow for Real Madrid given that Trent Alexander-Arnold has been the undisputed starter at right-back since joining the club, meaning the veteran Spanish international has mainly been providing depth cover this season. The club will monitor his recovery closely before setting any specific return timeline, though the fractured toe is likely to keep him sidelined until the end of the season. If that is the case, Carvajal would end the season with 19 appearances (eight starts) across all competitions, contributing 14 tackles, five interceptions and 22 clearances.
